The Beast We Call Burnout
If you don’t rest, the body will rest for you.
The slow, laborious thumping of your heart reminds you that you are still alive as you lie there paralyzed by soul-crushing anguish. Countless hours of operating on all cylinders has finally caught up to you. Did you honestly think that you could outwork your own body? Nice try.
Way to go you high achiever. All this work and now look at you lying there limp and virtually lifeless. You only have enjoy strength to breath. Even that is a lot on your drained body. It’s as if it takes all of your energy to expand and contract your lungs to produce laborious breaths. Each limb feels foreign like you can’t quite make them move without heroic effort. All you can do is turn over.
So, you lie there and lie there until you eventually find the strength to get up. What came over you? I’ll tell you what that it was. It was burnout. You were empty. Completely drained. And your body kicked you out of the driver seat. Next time, don’t ignore the signs.
Take care of yourself 🤍
